Meet Jules – The Beneath Our Sun Print Designer
As part of our meet the makers story for our first-ever Australian made collection, Beneath Our Sun, we’re excited to introduce you to the talented artist behind the Acacia print. Jules is known for her signature romantic florals and bohemian aesthetic, so we were delighted when she agreed to collaborate with us on the beautiful print for this limited-edition collection. Below we chat about Jule’s creative process, print design, inspiration and find out what she’s manifesting in 2021…
JULES, PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF…
Hello! I’m a freelance textile designer, currently based on the coast in Sydney! I spend most of my days drawing/painting flowers and creating patterns for beautiful fashion brands. I feel super lucky that what was once my hobby has become my job!
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR AESTHETIC?
I’d say my design aesthetic has a soft bohemian vibe to it. I’ve always had a love for watercolours, vintage key line motifs and Indian textiles!
WHERE DO YOU LOOK FOR INSPIRATION?
I like to look for inspiration in nature and existing textiles from vintage origins/traditional artisan processes. I’m always inspired by Indian block prints, paisleys and floral chintz and can get easily lost for hours in botanical books or on Pinterest/Etsy accounts finding textiles from different lands and eras.
TELL US THE STORY BEHIND THE ARTWORK YOU CREATED FOR OUR AUSTRALIAN MADE PRINT ACACIA.
The Acacia print was such a special one to create. Each individual motif is hand sketched and painted with watercolours, inspired by the lively colours and textures of our native flora. I just love how it captures the blossoming beauty from our very own backyard!
WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR PRINT DESIGN BEGIN AND HOW HAS IT GROWN AND EVOLVED?
My passion for print design was very much a self-taught journey. It was only when I went travelling after University in 2014 that I immersed myself in Batik, Mud dyeing and Block printing workshops in Asia where I discovered this world of textile design. When I first started designing prints, I had no official training only a degree in graphic design/illustration. All I knew was that I liked to draw, I loved flowers and to wear pretty things- so that’s where it all started. I moved to Bali and lived there for 3 years, learning the trade and worked closely with a few Bali based labels and textile studios. It was so important for me to have that time and creative freedom in Bali to grow my skill and style. When I moved back to Sydney in 2018, I worked full time for an Australian Fashion Label amongst some of the most inspiring designers, and learnt so so much. Fast forward to now I still get giddy every time I see my art out in the world worn by so many different humans for brands I adore.
WHO ARE THE CREATIVES THAT YOU’RE CURRENTLY ADMIRING?
There are so many! I’m currently drooling over @memor_studio pottery, @simuero_ jewellery, @mirador_ painted sarongs, @viancasoleil island photography, @blockprintcompany artisan craft, @nicolefabredesigns vintage collection and @jeannedekroon ethical approach to fashion… Just to name a few!
WHAT ARE YOUR MOST CHERISHED DAILY RITUALS?
A bit of yoga in the morning and a walk in the sunshine always make my days feel complete.
WHAT’S YOUR DEFINITION OF BEAUTY?
To me, beauty is anything that makes you smile and feel happy. I feel and see it everywhere.
I’M CURRENTLY OBSESSED WITH…
This band called Drug Cabin. They aren’t super recent, but I’ve only just discovered them and I’m obsessed!
THIS YEAR I’M MANIFESTING…
A home!
My partner and I have been working really hard to buy a place,
he is from California so we really can’t wait to make our own little home together on the coast.
